We live in a transformative age. One that’s not pushed from the past but drawn-in by the future– where as a global village we ask through our technology and visions “what is possible?” Our disruptions intersect the fundamental anatomy of human life: the economic, social, political, and environmental spheres. And each emergence of novelty forces us to challenge convention, the hard-wired programming of millennia. This results in pain and ugliness, yes. But also immense hope and possibility.
“Voices & Visions” expresses this impulse to innovate and change the world. Where do ideas come from? How does inspiration happen? It’s hard to understand. Some thinkers and mystics describe it as a stream of visuals, played on the substrate of consciousness-- hyper-dimensional, foreign, and alterable. Others have described it as a voice, clear and concise with an immediate brilliance. We are compelled to manifest, from interior to exterior, and are in-turn changed. The process is reflexive, compounding, and open. To know this, breathe this, is to up-level consciousness and hack reality.
When I began Leafbread I wrote in my notebook “the human condition is to transcend all conditions.” It’s a line that continues to confuse me with its obvious paradox. Yet “Voices & Visions” explores this core-value through art, writing, design, and radical new approaches to how and why we live. As part of our deepening commitment to plurality and commonality, Issue 2 features diverse work from diverse people. We want to represent the world, not just some aspects of it– as in the narrow corners of high-brow and specialized journals or the transient buzz of pop-woke blogs.
Issue 2 wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our contributors – whose work explores the depths of the human imagination through acrylic, the sensuous physiology of natural building, shamanic models of thought, sustainable travel and conservation initiatives, the music of mind and heart in verse, and more. Thank you for adding your inspiration, your unique touch, to the virtual village that is Leafbread and Voices & Visions. To our readers, thank you, I hope you continue to find value in this project.
